Young People Vaping and Nicotine Products
Health Needs Assessment
Vaping and nicotine product use is increasing amongst young people. Early intervention to help young people understand the risks and not start using these products is key to positive health outcomes. The Health Needs Assessment (HNA) will gather the views of young people aged 11-18 years, giving a better understanding of needs in East Dunbartonshire. It will also provide an evidence base to target supports and resources, and inform national data and research, as well as public health approaches across Scotland.
Project Background
EDVA and Trading Standards have received funding from East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership Health Improvement Team to work together on a project that contributes to the delivery of:
• Scotland’s Population Health Framework 2025-2035: Enabling Healthy Living – Tobacco Free Generation (Tobacco and Vapes Implementation Plan)
• The aspirations set out in the East Dunbartonshire Public Health Framework 2024–27
The project has 2 parts to it:
• Trading Standards - Test purchasing – monitoring compliance with Challenge 25 in retail settings and Integrity purchasing – assessing whether vape products on sale are legally compliant
• EDVA – Health Needs Assessment – Survey and focus Groups to gather local data to inform future policy, planning and service development.
Why are we doing a survey and focus groups?
To:
Understand how vapes and nicotine products are being used by young people
Understand young peoples’ views and attitudes to these products
Use data to inform future public health campaigns, inform policy and planning and shape potential future services.
