GCU Community Factsheet - How to Engage With Working-Age Men In Your Community.
New findings from the WIGWAM-S project have highlighted practical ways communities can better engage working-age men (aged 16–65) in local groups and activities, helping to improve health, wellbeing and social connection.
The research found that men are interested in a wide range of activities, including sports, gaming, food-based events, cycling, walking groups and social spaces for dads. However, barriers such as work patterns, childcare responsibilities, costs, transport issues and mental health challenges often prevent men from getting involved.
Importantly, the study shows that successful engagement depends not just on the activity itself, but on creating inclusive, enjoyable spaces where men feel welcome, heard and able to connect with others.
The findings offer valuable guidance for community organisations looking to attract and support working-age men more effectively.
